Blue Flame Cowl

She rushed to meet him. Because of their work schedules, they could only meet every fourth day. Three days apart… one day together. It was the fourth day…their day. Would he notice that bit of color at her neck…the cowl she had worked on for three days…thinking of him with every stitch. The yarn was soft alpaca. The pattern was theirs…three stitches of one color, one of the next. 3 and 1….3 and 1.

He had to notice. He would. They were connected. He proved it time and time again. He had this way of giving her a sly smile and a quick wink when he knew….when they knew …there was a connection between them….some small truth only they knew.

She had thought of that grin…that wink… while she worked on the cowl. Every round….3 and 1…3 and 1. The colors were shades of blues and lavenders accented with the spicy warmth of pumpkin. In her mind the blues became his smile….the hits of pumpkin, his oh so mischievous winks. Cool warmth…like blue flames.

Then he was there. She ran to meet him. They embraced and then he stepped back and grinned. With a wink, he said, “nice scarf.”

So, he didn’t know the word “cowl”…she would teach him. There was time.

Kanuga Knitting and Quilting ’12 – very late

Oh, my…this is late.

Reason #1: I have been so busy working on the joint venture with Mountain Meadow Wool and Serendipity Yarn that I haven’t had any time to post about Kanuga.
Reason #2: I had such a good time that I forgot to take any pictures…or at least not many.

So now…I am almost through with my part of the joint venture and figured I should post the meager group of pictures I did manage to take.

But before I do…I need to talk about Kanuga for a small bit. This was the year I finally got what KKQ (Kanuga Knitting and Quilting) is about. Yes, I know I am the coordinator…and have been for all of the seven years the retreat has been going on. Surely I should understand what the retreat is about….right? I discovered this year that I have understood only a small fraction of what was actually going on.

A big clue was the first afternoon when one group after another who came through the doors had this euphoric look on their faces. They would look around, take a deep breath, and gush how much they had been looking forward to being there. “I cannot believe we are finally here. I’ve been looking forward to this since last year.”

The next clue was as I asked around throughout the long weekend about what people wanted for the next retreat. “I just look forward to seeing everyone year after year” “This is like adult summer camp” were the answers.

Summer Camp…a place to do the things you love…to learn new things in a comfortable setting…see old friends (and make new ones) who are not from your home town…sit up late and swap stories…and find you are not so different after all.

Yeah…that’s about right.

Silly me…I thought it was a knitting and quilting retreat. I have been so busy making it happen and trying to make sure everyone was having a good time …getting the instruction they wanted…that I missed it. It is about the people and the relationships…easy to say…but it really is why everyone comes back year after year. I discovered all I needed to do was to sit back and let Kanuga do what it does best.

…and now those pictures I promised…

Hope to see everyone next year.

Back to knitting,
